If any of you follow me either on Instagram or Facebook then you know I recently made my first small barn quilt. Now, for those that aren't familiar with the concept, let me shared what I've learned so far. I first heard of barn quilts from following the many "farmhouse decor" accounts I enjoy on social media, really can't even remember which, the thing is a picking couple I follow Ruffles + Overalls began making them and they were gorgeous. As a curious crafter and a quilt admirer I made a simple search and got myself the book by Suzi Parron: Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement.
Amazing read, highly recommend the book. Is all how it started in 2001 Ohio by Donna Sue Groves who wanted to honor her mother and her Appalachian heritage by painting a quilt square on their barn. This turned to a group effort which started the biggest grassroots movement in America. The author brings the stories and is amazing. Waiting for the 2nd book Following The Barn Quilt Trail to arrive.
I searched Florida and to my surprise it does have a quilt trail, up in the north. The Florida Trail idea came from Stephanie Metts, who owns Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe in Trenton. In 2013 the community adopted the idea and Florida's first block is named Trenton's Compass Rose which symbolizes guidance for visitors to the area.
Of course barn quilts are as fascinating as regular quilts; the stories and meanings are just inspiring. So, I remembered I had two small pallets I bought at Hobby Lobby's clearance section and said to myself: "this I must try".
I used this 12 x 12 wall decor pallet piece and check out the price.
did 1 coat of white chalk paint
definitely needed a second coat, chose a basic design, measured here is first color
of course do the graph lightly, better seen here
and here is the finished piece
again, sorry for the lighting, was nighttime + indoors; but didn't it come out great?!?! I'm currently working on the second one, but all ready planning the third which will be a big and colorful one for the front of my house, yay!!
